Marine Gardens BC – report for week ending Saturday 22/06/19
(June 22, 2019)“League wins for Marine Gardens”
Wednesday 19 June – Marine hosted Goring Manor for a West Sussex League division two clash. It was the first encounter between the teams at this level and it proved to be a hard-fought & see-saw affair throughout. One of those matches where every shot on every rink becomes vital. Once the action had ceased the cards revealed 2 winning rinks for each side, but Marine were victorious by the slender margin of 2 shots.
Consequently, Marine snared 6 league points while Manor went home with 4 points & their first defeat of the campaign.
Top rink honours for Marine went to Len Tebby, John Netts, Francis Fahey & skip Ivan Godsmark who prevailed by 21 shots to 12. This was particularly impressive as after 15 ends both sides were locked on 10 shots apiece. But Ivan the Tremendous & his loyal cohort kept their nerve and pulled away to secure a crucial rink win.
Also successful was skip Harry Smith who won by 14 shots to 11. Harry was supported by the ever-consistent Terry Ashley, Norman Deegan MBE & Mike Collins.
Dennis Martin’s rink lost by 7 shots against strong opponents led by Frank Tsang. Finally Mike Hitchin’s rink lost by just 3 shots against experienced skip Tommy Tsoi. Tommy spent 40 years driving a bus; the same care & accuracy was still in evidence in this game. Especially when with one terrific drive he turned a 5 shot deficit into a 5 shot advantage! A 10 shot turnaround that the Marine players could only admire…through gritted teeth!
Rink scores summarised below –
Jim Back, David Sayer, Jim Gray & skip Dennis Martin – 18 shots v F Tsang 25 shots
Len Tebby, John Nettleingham, Francis Fahey & skip Ivan Godsmark – 21 shots v B Taylor 12 shots
Terry Ashley, Norman Deegan, Mike Collins & skip Harry Smith – 14 shots v H McGarry 11 shots

Thursday 20 June – Marine Gardens played host to old friends Rottingdean, who brought some sunshine; which was much needed, plus a very strong team, which was rather less welcome! The 5 rink friendly was played in glorious sunshine; with the visitors winning 3 rinks to the hosts 2.
However, the magnitude of Rottingdean wins on their 3 rinks meant an overall victory by the scorching margin of 69 shots. Marine’s blushes were spared by a top rink win for skip Brian Fuller; by 29 shots to 20, with studious support from the excellent Wendy Wilson, the rapidly improving George Tracey and tenacious David “Comrade” Hughes.
There was also a win for skip Eric Hayward; by 18 shots to 17, with nerveless support from Dave Holden, the sparkling Lucy Marshman & Ian Dalton.
