Marine Gardens BC – report for week ending Sunday 28/07/19
(July 28, 2019)“Quiet week for Marine ends with sun-kissed win”
Wednesday 24/ 07 & Marine played away to the manicured green of Worthing Pavilion for a Stracey Shield match comprising 4 rinks. The already speedy surface was made quicker still by the baking sun, but two of the Marine rinks adapted in impressive fashion. The other two, sadly but understandably, suffered heavy reversals.
Overall the ever-strong Pavilion team were deserving winners, by the comfortable margin of 114 shots to 64. But the visitors did not depart empty handed; winning on two rinks they secured four well merited points.
Dennis Martin & his rink; Dave Holden, Steve Davis & Pauline Hughes, had a splendid afternoon. After 11 ends they were adrift by 6 shots to 14; but a trio of 5 shot hauls, on the 14th, 16th & 18th ends gave them the ascendency. Although the hosts picked up three shots on the 19th end, the visitors closed out the game winning by 27 shots to 20.
Also winning well was skip Mike Hitchin, backed up by the experience of Shaun Coppard, Leon White & Dave Mugridge. They had the opposite sort of game to Dennis Martin’s rink. Ahead in the early exchanges they were 11 shots to 3 up after 11 ends. But then home knowledge started to tell culminating in a six on the 19th end for the hosts, which made it a nail-biting 17 shots apiece.
However, the visitors kept their nerve and hit back immediately with a four shot success on the 20th end. Pavilion snared two shots on the last end, but could not stop Marine’s Mike & friends winning by 21 shots to 19.
Rink score summarised thus –
Wendy Wilson, Len Tebby, Albert Leatham & skip Ivan Godsmark – 7 shots v B Evans 42 shots
Shaun Coppard, Leon White, Dave Mugridge & skip Mike Hitchin – 21 shots v S Warr 19 shots
David Hughes, Albie Marsella, Jenny Ashman & skip Frieda Goulding – 9 shots v A Palmer 33 shots

Marine Gardens 64 shots (4 points) lost to Worthing Pavilion 114 shots (6 points)
Sunday 28/07 – Marine Gardens welcomed their friends from Lindfield BC for a four rink friendly played in sunny but blustery conditions. The benches around the green were packed, albeit many visitors had come to see the vintage buses on West Parade. They were also treated to some vintage bowling as Marine ran out winners on three rinks and by 79 shots to 66.
The visitors were not down-hearted and there was much laughter & chat to be heard across the green. Top rink honours for Marine went to skip David Sayer who enjoyed enthusiastic support from Linda Gayle, Roger Parrish & Terry Ashley. They won by 22 shots to 10 and were ahead from the 6th end to the last.
