Marine Gardens BC – report for week ending Sunday 18/08/19
(August 18, 2019)“Charity day great success at Marine Gardens!”
Thursday 15/08/19 – Marine Gardens played away to East Preston in their penultimate West Sussex League match; a must win affair if a swift return to division three was to be avoided. The home tie had been a hard-fought classic with East Preston just edging it.
This time the victory margin was more pronounced with the hosts winning by 83 shots to the visitors 63. Marine did well to secure two winning rinks; and with them 4 points, but that was simply insufficient to put any pressure on fellow relegation battlers Maltravers. All credit to East Preston who remain in contention for promotion to division one.
Top rink for the visitors was gained by Noel Stevenson, Leon White, Dave Mugridge & skip Dennis Martin. They won by 23 shots to 15. Also bagging some points was Ivan Godsmark & his rink of Len Tebby, David Smart & Jim Gray.
Rink scores summarised below –
Len Tebby, David Smart, Jim Gray & skip Ivan Godsmark – 20 shots v J Holt 14 shots
Noel Stevenson, Leon White, Dave Mugridge & skip Dennis Martin – 23 shots v J Clear 15 shots
Harry Tattersall, Norman Deegan, Mike Collins & skip Harry Smith – 9 shots v P McAvoy 35 shots
Terry Ashley, Albert Leatham, Terry Urben & skip Mike Hitchin – 16 shots v E Pidgeon 19 shots
Marine Gardens 68 shots (4 points) lost to East Preston 83 shots (6 points)
Saturday 17/08/19 – Marine Gardens final West Sussex League match of the 2019 campaign and their last in division two. The visitors were Pulborough, chasing promotion at the other end of the league table. As always, the hosts got stuck in and secured wins on 2 of the 4 rinks.
However, life in division two has exposed some frailties; a lack of consistency overall and a fatal inability to hold onto promising positions in the closing ends of a match. This has cost Marine Gardens dearly and a fully deserved relegation is the result. But all credit to Pulborough who were good value for their win by 83 shots to 72.
Winning rinks for Marine were Len Tebby, John Nettleingham, Jim Gray & skip Ivan Godsmark who prevailed by 21 shots to 17. Skip Harry Smith marshalled his troops well; Harry Tattersall, Eric Hayward and Mike Collins as they won by 24 shots to 21.
Rink score summarised below –
Len Tebby, John Nettleingham, Jim Gray & skip Ivan Godsmark – 21 shots v J Brown 17 shot
Terry Ashley, Leon White, Terry Urben & skip Mike Hitchin – 18 shots v I Salmon 22 shots
Bob Cole, Dave Holden, Dave Mugridge & skip Albert Leatham – 9 shots v P Day 23 shots
Harry Tattersall, Eric Hayward, Mike Collins & skip Harry Smith – 24 shots v S Adsett 21 shots
Marine Gardens 72 shots (4 points) lost to Pulborough 83 shots (6 points)
Sunday 18/08/19 – Marine Gardens may be down in the West Sussex League, but thankfully attendance and takings were up at the annual Captain’s Charity Fun Day. The charity in question was “Meningitis Now!” and at least £1,000 was raised through the usual blend of fun games on the green, tombola, spirit raffle and guess the weight of the cake.
Lesley McMurdie was the lady with an eye for baked goods as she guessed the correct weight. Fellow member Jim Gray ran the spirit raffle; his stentorian tones could be heard right across Marine Gardens and if Bob Smytherman ever needs time off from Town Crier duties, we have a stand-in with Jim!
The sun shone, club members worked hard, and the Worthing public were as kind-hearted as ever. The tally of just over £1000 was a terrific result, but with other events to be added in the final cheque will be greater still.
