Sunday 1 September & Marine Gardens played host to Woodingdean for a friendly match of four rinks. Several of the home side had participated in the thrilling club finals which concluded the day before and perhaps there was an element of fatigue. For while the rinks were evenly shared; two apiece, it was Woodingdean who played more consistently and emerged with a well-deserved win by 75 shots to 61.
Skip Ivan Godsmark was ahead throughout the game and won by 17 shots to 14. Ivan enjoyed good support from a blend of youth & experience, his team being Reg Perkins, Tilly Hennings & Bob Cole.
New skip Steve Davis marshalled his troops with great flair; after 17 ends they were down by 16 shots to 11. But the opposition had scored their last shot as the home rink won the last 4 ends and the game by 17 shots to 16. Steve had unswerving support from Lesley McMurdie, Bill Hebert & Albie Marsella.

Tuesday 3 September and Marine travelled to Steyning for a friendly match of five triples played with the Downs as a delightful backdrop to the scene.
The visitors bagged a rare win on the road, albeit by a modest margin of 5 shots. The biggest contribution came from the trio of Mary Etherington, Pauline Sayer & skip Harry Smith who won by 21 shots to 12.
Also, in the winner’s enclosure was Pamela Chambers, Leon White & skip Pauline Hughes, victorious by 14 shots to 13. A good win, particularly as they were 13 shots to 8 down after 14 ends but won all of the last four ends to snaffle a well merited win.
Finally, the trio of David Hughes, David Sayer & skip Ivan Godsmark were staging their own renaissance. After 12 ends they were down by 11 shots to 4 but giving up is not in the DNA of Marine Gardens. They won the last six ends, bagged 10 shots and took the game by 14 shots to 11.
So, three rinks won including some stirring come backs and victory overall by 5 shots.

Wednesday 04/09 – Playing at home Marine hosted Billingshurst in a friendly game consisting of 4 lots of triples. It was a good-natured tussle between two evenly matched sides; however, the hosts edged it by winning 2 rinks & drawing another en-route to a win by 78 shots to 67.
The victory was anchored by the trio of Alan Patterson, Albie Marsella & skip Mike Hitchin; they were 4 shots to 1 down after 5 ends but collected 3 sets of 5 shots to wind by winners by 29 shots to 15. There was an excellent fightback from Linda Gayle, Eric Hayward & skip Jenny Ashman. 16 shots to 11 down after 14 ends things looked bleak. However, the Marine trio rallied to win the last 4 ends and 7 shots to bag a win by 18 to 16.
Ivan Godsmark’s triple were 14 shots to 11 down with 2 ends remaining but picked up 3 shots to merit a tie.

Thursday 05/09 – Marine made the trip up the A24 for a social game against Pulborough; 3 lots of triples. Notwithstanding the loss on all 3 rinks and by 57 shots to 38, the visitors enjoyed the first-class green and warm hospitality of their hosts.
Best performance for Marine came from Pamela Chambers, Albie Marsella & skip Mike Hitchin who lost by just 4 shots; 12 played 16.

Saturday 07/09 – Ewell BC made the long journey down from Surrey to fulfil a long-standing friendly against Marine Gardens. The game comprised 4 triples and 2 rinks with the hosts winning on just 2 of them. However, most games were very close, but unfortunately Barry Cucknow, Gerry Perch, Pauline Sayers & club captain Mike Ives ran into some talented & determined opposition.
The result was a rink defeat of 28 shots to 6 and unsurprisingly that was sufficient to swing the overall battle in favour of Ewell, by 94 shots to 72. Bright spots for Marine included Lesley McMurdie, Bob Muggridge and skip David Sayer who prevailed by 15 shots to 12.
Also celebrating a rink win was skip Eric Hayward who enjoyed great support from Reg Perkins, Mark Berriman and Clive Wooton. They won by 17 shots to 13 having been 13 to 10 down after 15 ends. They fought back to take the last 3 ends; snaffle 7 shots along the way and secure a well- deserved win. Skip Dave Mugridge lost by a single shot; skips Mike Hitchin and Jenny Ashman both lost by just 3 shots each in what was an absorbing contest throughout.
