News Update
Marine Gardens Bowling Club, report w/ending Sunday, 4th August 2024.
(August 04, 2024)In our annual fixture, Captain v Vice-captain, the good medals went to Vice-captain Bob Cole and his team winning 4 – 1 rinks with a narrow overall shots victory 67 - 60. Sandy Lay-Flurrie, Bob Hurst, Helen Stirling, and skip Jenny Power gained the top spot on the podium with a 16 - 10 win.
The baton was however dropped in the two home fixtures in the Brodie Tray and WSBL against Tarring Priory and Maltravers, respectively. Firstly, the rinks with Tarring Priory were shared 2 apiece but in a photo finish the visitors secured the extra points with a 67 - 64 lead. In a closely contested match, Perry Cairns and Pamela Chambers posted a 17 - 14 win for the home team.
In the top of the league clash with Maltravers, another close encounter was witnessed with Maltravers winning 2 – 1 rinks. Marine Gardens almost closed the shots difference gap with Gerry Perch, John Nettleingham, Perry Cairns, and skip Ivan Godsmark winning 25 - 13 in the final rink to finish. This heroic effort fell short of what was needed and Maltravers edged home 65 - 63 winners taking 6 of the 8 points available.
On Thursday, our Social Secretary, Wendy Wilson arranged a visit to Hove Greyhound Stadium, where our members enjoyed tasty food, drinks, and the evening’s racing.
The final fixture in this period saw Marine Gardens entertain visitors from West Harrow Community Bowls Club. Played in brilliant sunshine the home team won 2 – 1 rinks (54 - 42) with top rink honours going to the captain for the day, Mark Berriman, Bill Hurran, and Les Gritton with a fine 23 - 12 win. Great, to see new members of Marine Gardens taking part in this fixture, and our thanks to Pat Hogan for setting up this match.
We now look forward to our Charity Day event on Friday 9th August in aid of the Worthing Food Bank, seeded by The Trussell Trust, which all our members are encouraged to support.
