Marine Gardens Bowling Club, report w/ending Sunday, 11th August 2024.

(August 11, 2024)

This week's highlight was undoubtedly the Charity Event Social Secretary Wendy Wilson organised in support of the Trussell Trust (Worthing Food Bank). All bowlers were asked to wear colourful attire and donate proscribed foodstuffs. Instructions were obeyed and in addition to a generous contribution being made to the food bank a most enjoyable afternoon of bowling was experienced. Brian Saunders was triumphant in the Spider competition and there were many more winners in the raffle which followed raising an added £318.00. Gold medal to Wendy and all her helpers.

In the bread-and-butter matches which followed, Marine Gardens experienced mixed fortunes.

In the Brodie Tray at home to Shoreham, 8 points were garnered having won 3 - 1 rinks, and the final score was 71 – 59. Graeme Poole and Perry Cairns made a massive contribution with a 22-9 victory.

This position was reversed in a rain-affected match at Maltravers where we lost 3 – 1 rinks, the final score was 53 – 28. A bedraggled trio of Alan Paterson, Jenny Ashman and Duncan Gayler won in the last end 10 – 9 and 2 points were salvaged.

The weather and scoring improved in the WSBL fixture at home against Worthing Pavilion.
Marine Gardens won 2 – 1 rinks, the final score was 54 – 47. Top Rink honours, going to David Barlow, John Nettleingham, Perry Cairns, and skip Ivan Godsmark.

A friendly fixture against visitors from Rowledge ended in the games being shared at 3 rinks apiece but the visitors had the overall shot advantage of 94 – 89. Angela Neale, Alan Paterson, and Nick Sinden flew the flag for Marine Gardens posting a 23 - 11 win.

The Triples League competition concluded with the Condors flying high with 135 points and the Jackdaws and Magpies flapping behind with 124 and 123 points, respectively. Congratulations to Liz Baldwin, Gerry Perch, Roger Parrish, Helen Stirling, Colin Markland, Perry Cairns, and Brian Saunders. Thanks also to Tim Baldwin for overseeing this much-enjoyed event.

Alan Paterson, Press Officer.
