Marine Gardens Bowling Club, report w/ending Sunday, 18th August 2024
(August 18, 2024)The week started with home and away matches against East Preston. Marine Gardens Ladies lost their home match in the GSM league 0 - 2 (22 - 36) but the Gents returned home with all 8 points following a 0 - 3 rink victory (31 - 81) in the WSBL match. Bob Cole, John Nettleingham, Perry Cairns, and skip Ivan Godsmark could do no wrong in posting a 39 - 5 win.
There was a closer encounter in the Stracey Shield fixture at home against Tarring Priory with each side winning 2 rinks. On this occasion, Roger Parrish and David Sayer joined forces with John Nettleingham and skipped by Ivan Godsmark to earn Top Rink honours and give Marine Gardens the extra points (6 - 4), a shot difference of 73 – 70 to Marine Gardens.
Crablands provided the opposition for the final fixture in the Ladies GSM league. This was a well-contested match, with Crablands taking the honours 0 – 2 rinks, with a final score of 28 - 36.
It was back to internal warfare with the President v Captain match for the Jubilee Cup.
The first skirmish (better known as the Spider) was won by Clive Wootton and Rob Hurst.
In the main battle of the day, the Captain's team won 3 rinks to 2 but the overall score of 72 - 64 favoured the President's team and therefore President Norman kept the trophy and more importantly the bragging rights. Much of the credit for this victory must go to Heather Marsella, Brian Fuller, Brian Harrison, and skip Jenny Ashman who earned Top Rink honours with a fine 17 - 6 win. A most enjoyable afternoon played in a good spirit. Many thanks to President Norman for hosting the event and for providing all the spoils of war.
The final match in this period took place at home in the Brodie Tray against a very good Southwick team. We lost 1 – 3 rinks with a final score of 53 – 73, with Bob Cole and Graeme Poole salvaging 2 points with a well-earned 19 - 10 win.
The Aussie Pairs competition has now been completed. The Tasmanian Devils were the winners with 84 points, while Platypus and Koala hotly pursued them with 81 and 79 points, respectively. Thanks to Captain Jim for introducing this new event.
